Carlo Ancelotti defends Isco change as Madrid fans complain

Carlo Ancelotti has defended his substitution of Isco for Asier Illarramendi, despite whistled from Real Madrid fans.

The coach made the change as his team struggled to overcome Villarreal on Sunday night, with the game finishing 1-1.

Ancelotti said: "A coach makes the chances because he thinks it's better for the team. If the fans don't understand, I'm sorry, but I took the decision and made the change to add balance to the side."

The Italian denied that his team were tied and stood by his policy of not rotating his squad much.

He said: "If it’s a physical matter the drop-off should have been in the second half not the first. We simply encountered difficulties.

"In the first half we played at a very low tempo. We put in many crosses because we were not moving the ball around quickly enough. That rhythm changed in the second half, but we weren’t effective with the chances we created.

However, he said that his side is getting better.

Ancelotti claimed: "I think the team is improving. We have dropped two points but the league will be decided on the final day."
