Benitez explains James Rodriguez's omission from Madrid side

Real Madrid coach Rafa Benitez has explained his reason for leaving James Rodriguez on the bench for the game against Sporting Gijon last Sunday, a decision which took many people by surprise.

"Those that have a lot of experience in football know that after a World Cup or a Copa America, players have some time off, which is good for them," Benitez said.

"James joined [pre-season training] later than the rest, so he has had less preparation [for the new season] than his teammates.

"So it was a technical decision. He's a great player, important for us, as is Isco and everyone else. To generate a debate when a player has arrived late is not necessary, it doesn't mean the manager gets on badly with one player or another."

Benitez also praised the manner in which James accepted being left out. Questions were asked after James posted a message on social media saying he was in top physical condition.
