Barça & Madrid to battle for Celta's young star Hugo Alvarez

Celta Vigo youngster Hugo Alvarez Antunez is being targeted by Spanish football’s two most powerful clubs, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. Huguito, as he’s known at Celta’s cantera, has impressed scouts from both sides, who are now making moves to try and sign him.

Barça have been following him since last year, when he shone in a tournament in China. Celta and the Celta Foundation were in the Asian country to promote their brand abroad, with the Infantil B team finishing third in a tournament after beating Corinthians on penalties. Hugo Alvarez was named as the MVP.

He signed for Celta from Orense after the Vigo club’s scouts saw him playing and were surprised by his technical ability at such a young age. That’s what’s provoked the interest among La Liga’s biggest clubs, who now want to add him to their own academies.

At just 12-years-old, he is one of those footballers that already stands out above the rest - especially because of the way he manages the ball with both feet, his movement in attack and his goal scoring record. He’s impressed in the La Liga Promises in Miami, where Barça are also playing. In fact, the Catalan side eliminated Celta.

Even though Celta, in principle, have no intention of selling, what is true is that Barcelona have an advantage - their relationship with Celta, who throughout their history have counted on La Masia products. That’s been the case with Mingo, Carles Planas, Sergi Gomez and more recently Fontas and Nolito.
