Athletic defender Laporte could miss the rest of the season

Aymeric Laporte may have said goodbye to the season, although there will still be a little hope the Athletic Club defender will return before the campaign is over.

The Basque club released a statement on Thursday explaining that the defender “suffered an injury to his right ankle during France U21s game with Scotland. After the first test, he’s been diagnosed with a fracture-dislocation in the fibula and the right ankle.”

It added: “Upon his return to Bilbao, he will under go more tests to determine the extent of the injury and how long he will be out for.”

Laporte suffered the injury in a clash with Henderson in the 56th minute of France’s game with Scotland. He was taken off on a stretcher in tears.

The 21-year-old has a huge future in the game and is one of Athletic’s best players. He’s also wanted by a range of clubs - among them FC Barcelona.
