Madrid players received huge bonus for Camp Nou Clasico win

On Saturday, April 2, 2016, the Clasico between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid took place at Camp Nou.

Zinedine Zidane’s side won 1-2 and each of his players received a 150,000 euro payment. That was the bonus promised to them by the club’s president, Florentino Perez, if they could keep themselves in the title race.

Journalist Paco Gonzalez, from the programme Tiempo de Juego on Cadena Cope, revealed the amount on Sunday night’s show. Given the result, it seems the money motivated the Madrid players to beat Barça, coming back from 1-0 down after Gerard Pique opened the scoring.

Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo scored the Madrid goals which saw them move within seven points of Barcelona. If they’d have lost the gap would have increased to 13 points, leaving them out of the running for top spot.

That 150,000 euro bonus was how much each player would have received for winning the Copa del Rey, which escaped them when they were kicked out of the tournament for fielding the suspended Denis Cheryshev against Cadiz.
