The Ecuador international has not joined Espanyol on their pre-season tour

Instead he's set to move across Catalonia and join newly promoted Girona

Felipe Caicedo is close to moving to Girona. The Ecuador international will not travel with Espanyol to Indonesia and is set to leave the club in the coming hours. Save any surprises, his destination will be Pablo Machin's Girona, who will play in La Liga for the first time in their history this coming season.

Talks between the two clubs are advanced. Caicedo will join Girona on loan for the next season with an option to make the deal permanent next summer for three million euros. Espanyol hope to make the option to buy obligatory.

Even though it's only a loan move, Caicedo's departure will free up a lot of funds for Espanyol on their wage bill. The South American is one of the highest paid players at the club and will allow Quique Sanchez Flores more freedom to return to the market in search for a replacement.

Although with the return of Sergio Garcia, plus Gerard Moreno and Leo Baptistao, Flores is well covered in attack -- the main reason Caicedo's being allowed to leave -- and may well look to invest the money saved in improving other areas of the squad.
