Diego Simeone's Ballon d'Or jibe at Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo
Diego Simeone suggested Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d’Or because of the trophies his team’s won last year, not because he was necessarily the best player in the world.
Ronaldo won the Ballon d’Or in December and followed it up with FIFA’s The Best this month after a 2016 which saw him win the Champions League with Real Madrid and the European Championships with Portugal.
“Results mattering more than performances? Do you have any doubts? Look at who won the Ballon d’Or,” Simeone said after his side’s 1-0 win against Real Betis.
The Atletico boss was responding to a question made by captain Gabi, who said the result was much more important than the performance.
Atletico have recently returned to the principles which saw them win La Liga and reach the Champions League final in 2014, ditching a more intricate style of play in favour of more efficient football again.
