Celta Vigo squeeze through but Athletic and Villarreal suffer in Europa League

Celta Vigo beat Shaktar Donetsk 2-0 after extra-time to stop it being a dreadful night for La Liga teams in Europe in the Europa League.

Iago Aspas scored a late penalty to level the scores on aggregate before Gustavo Cabral nodded home in extra-time to send them through 2-1 on aggregate.

Elsewhere Athletic Bilbao were stunned 2-0 by Apoel Nicosia who progressed 4-3 on aggregate, with Athletic boss Valverde saying after the game:  "This is football. Anyone can call it what they want, a failure or whatever. We always set the bar high for ourselves.

"We were favourites and we have lost. What we have to do now is stick together, bear the brunt and on Sunday go out to win the game we have [vs Granada]."

Villarreal went into the second leg of their last 32 against Roma 4-0 down and emerged with some pride intact thanks to a 1-0 victory, with Rafael Santos Borre notching in the 15th minute.
