Atletico Madrid 1-0 Deportivo: Griezmann earns tight win

Atletico Madrid beat 10-man Deportivo de la Coruna at the Vicente Calderon thanks to an Antoine Griezmann goal in the second half, to move third in the table.

It was far from a great performance by the Rojiblancos but they did enough to win, with Diego Godin making a great last minute block from Emre Colak’s volley to keep his team ahead.

Atletico had a goal ruled out for offside early in the second half, when Griezmann fired home after a Yannick Carrasco shot had been parried.

The Belgian winger then went close again when he rattled a strike off the crossbar as Atletico looked to turn the screw on the Galicians. Goalkeeper German Lux, who spilled the first Carrasco shot made amends by getting his fingertips to the ball to stop the winger from lashing home.

They played the second half with 10 men after Faycal Fajr was sent off for a silly tackle which earned him his second yellow, but continued to resist Diego Simeone’s side, even off things were getting frantic.

Kevin Gameiro was introduced, surprisingly in place of Carrasco, who had been getting into his stride and looked the game’s most dynamic player.

Soon enough Atletico went ahead. Gameiro fired in a low cross and Griezmann tucked it home from close range.
