Mascherano also set to end his international career for Argentina

Javier Mascherano is expected to join his Barça team-mate Lionel Messi and announce his retirement for Argentina after losing the Copa America 2016 final.

The former Liverpool midfielder has been a runner-up in five major finals for his country and the only honours he won with the Albiceleste were two Olympic gold medals in 2004 and 2008.

This year's Copa America defeat adds to Macherano's heartbreak in the tournament in 2004, where Argentina lost to Brazil, 2007 losing again to the Verde-Amarelha and last year's defeat on penalties to Chile. And of course, most notably, he was present for the 2014 World Cup final to loss to Germany.

Tata Martino's team go back to their homeland empty-handed and the 23-year wait for a major trophy continues. Sunday proved not only to be the end for Messi but also - potentially - his close friend, who will both now likely focus on their club football with Barça.
