Maradona's subtle message to Messi prior to the Copa America final

So far, Diego Maradona hasn't yet come into the spotlight to discuss Argentina's latest setback after they lost the Copa America 2016 final to Chile.

It was the Albiceleste's third final loss in succession having been defeated in the 2014 World Cup by Germany and twice by Chile in the Copa America in 2015 and 2016.

The former Barça player has been critical lately of Lionel Messi who he claimed lacked leadership qualities for Argentina.

In the aftermath of defeat to the Roja, Messi announced his retirement from international football and ended his 11-year career playing for his country.

Although Maradona hasn't commented on the 29-year-old's decision, he did make reference to what should happen to the squad if they didn't return home from the MetLife Stadium with the trophy.

Speaking to Victor Hugo Morales on C5N, Maradona was very clear about his thoughts prior to the final, stating: "If we don't win, [the players] shouldn't return [to the squad]."

His comment seems poignant now more than ever after Messi's announcement on Sunday evening.
