Italy 1-1 Spain: Sergio Ramos throws away victory in Turin

Spain threw away three points in the 2018 World Cup qualifying clash against Italy when Sergio Ramos committed a clumsy late foul on Eder to give the hosts a penalty.

Di Rossi converted it coolly to level the scores after Vitolo's strike had sent Spain ahead, racing onto a Sergio Busquets through ball and roaming past Gianluigi Buffon, who rushed out but missed his tackle.

Spain were dominant throughout and deserved the win, but bad finishing and a lack of cutting edge undermined the way they had control of the game in midfield.

A couple of bad calls by the linesman hurt them too, with Diego Costa notably called offside when clean through, even though he had timed his run to perfection.

Italy will point to Costa booting the ball away while on a yellow card and not being sent off for it in mitigation.

Andres Iniesta put on a masterclass in midfield but the Barcelona man's fine display counted for little thanks to Ramos' later error.

The result now leaves Albania top of the group on six points, while Spain and Italy have four each.
