Chile win Copa America 2016 final after penalty shootout win

Chile inflicted yet more pain on Argentina as they won 4-2 on penalties to retain the Copa America on Sunday.

The Roja required the same method to beat the Albiceleste last year, with Francisco Silva scoring the decisive spot kick on this occasion to secure their second title in the competition.

With this victory, Chile rounded off a great campaign that began with defeat to Argentina in the group stages and ended in euphoria against the same opponents at the MetLife stadium.

For Tata Martino's team, the defeat is a new setback and a victorious gesture of fate, losing their third Copa America final in nine years and adding to the heartbreak of the 2014 World Cup final defeat against Germany.

Lionel Messi was marked closely throughout proceedings, Gonzalo Higuain failed miserably in front of goal and Angel Di Maria's impact was minimal, as he was substituted just after half time.

The stalemate in regulation time was a result of the high intensity shown by both sides, an approach that suited Chile as the game progressed.

It took 15 minutes for Argentina to settle and impose themselves on their opponents, with Javier Mascherano winning his battle against Arturo Vidal. With the dismissal of Marcos Rojo after 43 minutes, Mascherano had to drop deep to offer defensive cover and, as a result, Argentina lost control of the midfield.

Chile - even with Marcelo Diaz's sending off - managed to play the second half with more intelligence and patience. The tie ticked over into the shootout and with Messi and Lucas Biligia missing their penalties, Chile converted all four of theirs and won the final, achieving their second Copa America title in succession.
