Belgium have 40 possible coaches in mind to replace Marc Wilmots

Just a third of the prospective candidates have passed the first filter to succeed former Belgium coach Marc Wilmots, who left the post on July 15 after reaching the Euro 2016 quarter-finals.

The selection committee, consisting of five people and chaired by Bart Verhaeghe, have been "extremely discreet during a key time for the Red Devils", according to Le Soir.

In total, there are 40 names in the pre-selected list including former Roma coach Rudi Garcia and Marcello Lippi, who oversaw Italy's fourth World Cup triumph in 2006.

As for Louis van Gaal, who was sacked by Manchester United in May, the Dutchman has not been personally nominated to take the reigns for Belgium but Le Soir claim his agents have been "testing the waters".

Belgium's new coach isn't expected to be announced before the end of next and the selection committee must first reduce the list of candidates to four of five names.
