Atletico 1-0 Bayern: Carrasco's goal downs Ancelotti's men

Atletico Madrid beat Bayern Munich on Wednesday in a repeat of last season’s Champions League semi-final.

Yannick Carrasco scored the only goal of the game as Atletico’s mean defence once again dealt with the challenge of one of the world’s best sides.

Diego Simeone’s side have now conceded just four goals at the Vicente Calderon in 18 games since the Argentine took charge.

They also shut Bayern out in last season’s semi-final first leg when Saul Niguez scored the only goal.

This time it was Carrasco who grabbed the winner, scoring from the edge of the box just before half time via the post.

Atletico had been the better side in the first half, with Fernando Torres full of running but lacking when it came to taking his chances.

Thomas Muller headed into the side netting and Jan Oblak saved from David Alaba as Carlo Ancelotti’s Bayern side improved after the break.

Carrasco and Torres had chances on the break for Atletico before Robert Lewandowski fluffed a free header from six yards out.

There was then time for Antoine Griezmann to thump a penalty off the crossbar, but it didn’t come back to haunt him as the Rojiblanco held out for three points.
