The German Football Federation (DFB) said on Friday that they would be taking a historic decision: using the first female referee in the top flight, Bibiana Steinhaus.
After taking charge of games in the female Bundesliga, the 38-year-old who is a policewoman, took charge of matches in division three and then division two. She has been operating as a fourth official for a while in the top flight and has been an assistant in international games.
"It's always been my dream to referee in the Bundesliga. It's the confirmation of the hard work and the tough road I've trodden until this point," said Steinhaus.
