Alvaro Dominguez hits out at Gladbach after retiring at 27

In an interview with Marca he said he was considering taking legal action against the club, who responded on Thursday

Former Atletico Madrid centre-back Alvaro Dominguez has retired from football and hit out at Borussia Monchengladbach.

The defender has not played for over a year as he struggled with back injuries and retired at the age of 27 on Tuesday.

He says he may take legal action against the German club, whom he has played for since 2012 when he moved from the Vicente Calderon.

In an interview with Marca he said: "I'm considering every option and I'm in the hands of good lawyers in Germany.

"The club never informed me of the seriousness of my injury. I don't need to win a court case, I just want them to recognize that things weren't done right.

"They haven't recognised their mistake, no one has apologised to me. I just hope that by telling my story I can help other sportsmen."

Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl responded. He said in a statement: “Sadly Alvaro has made some serious accusations that we simply cannot understand.

“We of course appreciate that this is an emotional time he is going through after making such a difficult decision but I can say that our medical team did absolutely everything humanly possible to help him.

“The same goes for the club, with those involved helping where we could and were allowed to help, and we will continue to do so in the future - we’re there for Alvaro.”
