Xavi Simons the star of Barça's La Liga Promises success

Without any doubt at all, Xavi Simons was one of the stand-out players as Barcelona won the La Liga Promises. At just 12-years-old, the Dutch player consolidated his status in Miami and one of the Catalan club’s brightest prospects for the future.

Simons doesn’t stand out for his height, but he does look a lot bigger as he controls games on the pitch like few his age. His winning character and attitude make him captain material, but it’s not just his attitude, it’s aptitude, too. Tactically he is always well positioned and he never takes more touched than he needs. He’s the director of the orchestra.

His mother named him in honour of former Barcelona player Xavi Hernandez and he arrived in Spain when he was just three, although he initially struggled to adapt to his new surroundings. In recent months he’s had even more problems, with FIFA briefly presenting him from playing due to the investigation into the way Barça have signed foreign youngsters.

“We dedicate this success to out team-mate who cannot play because of FIFA,” Simons said after the 4-3 win over Valencia in the final. Another sign of his maturity on and off the pitch belying his years.

Simons exploded at the MIC in 2015 and the La Liga Promises has served to confirm what many knew before: the road towards success is a long one, but the young Dutch player is on the right path.
