Xavi: Ronaldo's had bad luck to be around at the same time as Messi

Xavi Hernandez says the only people who compare Cristiano Ronaldo with Lionel Messi are Real Madrid supporters.

The former Barcelona midfielder recognises the Portugal forward is an elite player, but feels he's unfortunate to have to share the same era as Messi.

"Leo's mental and physical speed is second to none, he is without doubt the best in the world," Xavi said on Cadena Ser show El Larguero.

"Only a fool could have played football and not recognise Cristiano is an elite footballer, but he just has had bad luck to be around at the same time as Leo.

"The only people who draw comparisons with the two are in Madrid."

Xavi, now 36 and playing his football with Qatari side Al-Sadd, also feels Messi has plenty more success ahead of him.

He added: "Leo is only a 29-year-old, which is still young in football. I didn't win trophies at Barcelona and Spain until I was 28.

"Messi still makes a difference in four out of five games he plays in."
