Why Barça are working with 43 million euro budget, not 68 million

Why Barça are working with 43 million euro budget, not 68 million

After Josep Maria Bartomeu's press conference on Thursday, it was made clear that Barcelona would have 43 million euros to spend on players once the deal for Samuel Umtiti has been completed. However, some confusion has been generated after information in some media suggested that the club would have 68 million euros available.

The Blaugrana had 60 million euros, with eight million more added to that after the sale of Marc Bartra. From that 68 million euros, the 25 million euros for Umtiti has to be reducted. That leaves a figure of 43 million euros. It is true that Barça reserve the possibility to put the signing of the French defender through with 2015-16's outgoings, but they will only do so if it is extremely necessary. In fact, it's not a real option at the moment keeping in mind how the market is right now. Although it's still too soon to say and things could change before September.

Last season, Barça received 38 million euros more than they had initially budgeted for. For that reason, the club could allocate the 25 million euros for Umtiti in the spendings for the 2015-16 season if a golden opportunity crops up on the market. That would still leave them with 13 million euros in 'extra' benefits from the last campaign.

However, the initial idea from the club is not to deviate from their planned route. Therefore, Luis Enrique and Robert Fernandez are working with 43 million euros on the table. That's the figure the sporting director and the coach have in mind as they look to improve a squad which, in addition to Umtiti and Denis Suarez, is likely to have two more new faces.
