An explosive derby against Espanyol saw a record amount of players sent off...

Barcelona ended the game against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday with nine men, something which hasn't happened for 13 years.

The date was Dec. 13, 2003 and it was in the derby against Espanyol when referee Pino Zamorano got card happy: six reds and 12 yellow cards.

In the game, which Barça won 3-1, with Rafa Márquez, Phillip Cocu and Ricardo Quaresma all dismissed. For the home side there were further red cards for Iván De La Peña, Soldevilla and Lopo.

In the case of Marquez and Quaresma, the red cards came via two yellow cards. But Dutchman Cocu saw a straight red for the way in which he protested a Raul Tamudo goal.

As well as the six players who were dismissed, Espanyol goalkeeping coach at the time Tommy N'Nkono was also sent off for his criticism of the official.

That particular derby remains to this day the game in the history of the Primera Division with the most dismissals.
