What Enrique told Samper ahead of Barça first team inclusion

Luis Enrique has been a very important figure for Sergi Samper, almost like a father in his career.

The Asturian coach was key to helping Barça decide to give the 21-year-old his chance in the first team ahead of next season. Enrique spoke with Samper a few days ago to inform the midfielder of the club's decision and expressed full confidence and support in what will be a new challenge for the youngster.

His defensive midfield position is highly coveted and occupied by the ever-present Sergio Busquets, but the long season that the Blaugrana will most likely have to face - with games in La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League to come - provides plenty of opportunities for game time and the chance to prove his worth to Enrique.

It's also worth noting the commitment that Samper has shown to Barça and his positive attitude to continue developing as a player in Catalonia. Five years ago, Arsene Wenger tried to tempt the midfielder to Arsenal, but he decided against the move - unlike fellow Barça youngsters Jon Toral and Hector Bellerin.

And now, as of July 19, Samper begins a new stage in his career when he is officially presented as a Barça first team player.

Many players have come through the ranks at the Catalan club and the local man will be hoping to write his name in the history books like the numerous illustrious names he'll be playing alongside next season.
