Thomas Vermaelen will take hamstring surgery and could miss 5 months

Thomas Vermaelen will be operated on next Tuesday by a renowned hamstring specialist in Finland, Dr Sakari Orava. This was announced by FC Barcelona after several days of speculation, which also added that the injury in the muscle of his right leg will need an estimated recovery time of 4-5 months

Vermaelen prefered a more conservative treatment, but many specialists recommended otherwise. Eventually the doctor convinced him to undergo the surgery, and told COPE that the downtime could even be reduced to three months.

It is possible that Vermaelen, who is yet to appear in a competitive match for Barcelona, may even end his first season without playing a single game for the first team.
