Atletico Madrid & Barça are working on the details of the deal

Real are also keen but Robert's involvement has proved key

Barcelona could deal a blow to Real Madrid by beating them to the signing of Atletico Madrid's Theo Hernandez. The transfer is not one they had prioritised for this season, but progress has been made in recent weeks.

The involvement of Robert Fernandez, who personally knows the player, could be key. The deal will be worth around 24 million euros, which is the player's release clause, although both clubs are working to reach a mutual agreement.

Sporting director Robert insisted on the signing last summer, but the conditions were not ideal. Theo had a 10 million euro release clause, although it was deemed a risk for an 18-year-old with no real La Liga experience.

However, his form while on loan at Alaves this season has convinced Barça of his huge potential, with Madrid also contacting his agents.

In recent weeks, Barça have worked with both the player and Atletico, who are never keen to sell to their city rival. They tension between the two clubs has increased due to Madrid's reported interest in Antoine Griezmann this season and Barça could be the ideal solution in the Theo case.

Barça and Atletico have a cordial relationship and the Rojiblanco would be open to negotiate, although they may not be willing to stray from the 24 million release clause.

JORDI ALBA

It has been rumoured Jordi Alba could be involved in the deal, but that's not true. Robert feels the left-back is non-transferable because he's one of the best in the world in his position.

Barca feel Theo can play in a back three or at full-back -- or even as the left-sided central defender in a four. His arrival would signal the end for Jeremy Mathieu.
