Why Mascherano is annoyed with FC Barcelona

The relationship between Javier Mascherano and Barcelona has deteriorated. The Argentine player is annoyed at the treatment he has received from the current board during several conflicts which have risen in the last few months.

1. Tax case. Mascherano, as with other members of the first team squad, has felt abandoned by the club. He has had to pay just over one million euros in irregularities and fines, as well as suffering a prison sentence that could become effective if in the future he suffers any judicial mishap. The promises of compensation on a contractual level have never happened.

2. Salary scale. The continued renewals of first team contracts have provoked important financial mis-matches in terms of wages. Leaving the biggest stars to one side, Mascherano's salary is a long way below the 'middle class' in the Barça dressing room. No-one has called him to correct or remedy this anomalous situation of a player who is an undisputed starter and key player for Luis Enrique.

3. Wear and tear. Mascherano is not the sort of leader who remains unmoved by certain situations. During the season, the dressing room has been through moments of tension and he has always assumed the reins, causing some personal wear and tear.

4. Position. Javier Mascherano has never complained publicly about his defensive role in the team. However, it is known that he feels more comfortable playing in midfield. His relationship with Luis Enrique is exceptional, though, and the praise from coach to player and player to coach has been mutual since the arrival of the Asturian in 2014.
