No team has ran less than Real Madrid in the Champions League

Los Blancos' new fitness coach is under the microscope after arriving from Lyon this summer

Real Madrid have won one and drawn one of their Champions League games this season, results which aren’t especially negative and leave them well placed to qualify.

However, there’s data which suggests Madrid’s defence of the European Cup has not got off to the best possible start.

Madrid are the team, by some distance, that has ran the least kilometres in the group stage of the competition.

English side Tottenham have ran the most (233,932km), running 57,791km more than Madrid (176,141km).

Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, have ran 54,084km more than their city rivals, while Sevilla and Barcelona have ran 42,809km and 40,150km more than Zinedine Zidane’s side respectively.

This data is curious as it arrives after Los Blancos brought in a new fitness coach in the summer, Pintus, robbed from Lyon.

The information reveals that the team are doing just enough, while the French coach’s methods aren’t helping avoid injuries, either, given knocks to Marcelo, Casemiro and others have plagued Madrid’s start to the season.

Madrid’s justification is that they are planning to improve as the season goes on, which is a similar posture to the one displayed by Rafa Benitez last season.
