Tata Martino has wondered why Lionel Messi puts up with Argentine criticism

Argentina manager Gerardo Martino admitted he has wondered why Lionel Messi continues to play for la Albiceleste considering all the criticism he receives.

"I've put myself in Lionel Messi's place and I've asked myself why I keep coming," the former Barcelona manager said.

"Now I ask myself less.

"But when I hear what I hear and I read what I read...

"The criticism he receives, above all that time at the Copa America (2011) and during the last World Cup."

Martino continued by saying that "no footballer should have to put up" with that level of criticism and that it "gives the feeling we don't like having him."

Speaking about Messi's Barça form, Tata said: "He's reached such a high level for so many years that the stakes are now too high.

"I see him trying to find his best version, but he's measured in a team that aren't expressing themselves as well as they have done."
