Suarez: I won't win Ballon d'Or because of marketing and Messi

Luis Suarez says he will never win the Ballon d’Or because he doesn’t have the marketing profile to do so.

The Barcelona striker picked up the second European Golden Shoe of his career on Thursday after scoring 40 goals in La Liga last season and is in the running to make the podium for the Ballon d’Or later this year.

However, he doesn’t expect to be in the top three: "The Ballon d'Or is more to do with marketing and press than for achievements on the pitch.

"I've earned all the awards I've been given. The Golden Shoe is for scoring the most goals and there's no option for people to take that away from me.

"I don't have a chance [with] the Ballon d'Or because it works around marketing and I don't have that. My ambition is to win another Champions League, that would be great."

And he admits that he has even less chance of winning the prize outright because of a certain team-mate of his.

"Of course," he said when asked if Lionel Messi’s presence makes it impossible to claim top spot.

"But I was referring to getting on the podium.

“To win it is impossible because I have the privilege of playing with the best in the world and an excellent person. He's the best in history."
