Silvan Widmer emerges as target as Barça look for a new right-back

The Swiss full-back has developed in recent seasons and is being followed by a number of clubs

Barcelona are clear that one of their summer signings will have to be a right-back. No-one doubts that it's one of the positions which the club have struggled in this season due to Aleix Vidal's irregular role. The Blaugrana's priority has been Joao Cancelo (Valencia), but they're not closing the door on other options on the market. And one right-back who has caught the eye is Udinese's Swiss international Silvan Widmer.

Sporting director Robert Fernandez and his team are combing the international market in a bid to find a right-back with a Barça profile. Someone who is young and does not cost the world. Cancelo was the top target, but Valencia want 30 million euros and his recent performances have generated doubts. Therefore, Barça's scouts have lengthened the list of players they're watching. One of them is Widmer, a player who is ready to take the next step in his career.

Widmer is a player who's emerged from the factory of the Pozzo family. They signed him years ago and he's now become a regular at Serie A side Udinese. He's a right-back who has evolved significantly in recent years and it's likely he will move on this summer. He is 23 and can still grow as a player. Juventus and Inter Milan showed an interest last summer, but did not reach an agreement. Bayern Munich are also keen. Udinese are usually tough negotiators, but they sell. We will have to see if, in the end, he's Barça's chosen one.
