SFR Sport: Arsenal have asked Barça about Jeremy Mathieu

Arsenal have reportedly made an enquiry with FC Barcelona about the situation of Jeremy Mathieu.

According to French website 'SFR Sport', the Gunners are looking for a left sided central defender who will not cost too much, and Arsene Wenger would like to bring in somebody with the experience of the Barça player to complete his squad.

The report states that Mathieu and his representatives are considering the proposal, having rejected the advances of Besiktas some weeks ago.

Mathieu joined Barça two seasons ago for 20 million euros, and still has two years left on his contract.

Technical secretary Robert Fernandez and coach Luis Enrique already warned that the transfer market would drag on, and that the month of August would be the most complicated.

The Catalan club still does not have their squad completed, and still await the departure of some players as well as the arrival of another forward.

Initially the plan was to not have any more defenders exiting, but everything would depend on the offer that Arsenal would be willing to make.

Barcelona will not sell the French international for less than 12 million euros, in order to fully maximise the value of the footballer.

In the case that Mathieu leaves, Barça would look to replace him with another centre-back of similar characteristics, with Las Palmas' Mauricio Lemos being their preferred option.
