Sergi Roberto is Barcelona's new twelfth man
Sergi Roberto has become one of the most important parts of the team almost over night. Not just because he can play as right-back in Dani Alves' absence, but also because with Rafinha out, the doors are open for him to become the No 12 of the team. At least until the Januarty market opens and Barcelona can register Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal, as well as signing other players, to complete the squad, which currently is only 23 men.
Sergi Roberto is confident. You just have to look at his performances as a right-back. However, Alves' return will be soon and it will turn him back into a midfielder. He will be a solid bet to give Andres Iniesta some rest, with the playmaker having already accumulated a lot of minutes with his club and country.
The depature of Xavi Hernandez meant the club had to strengthen midfield, and they did, with Arda, but he cannot play because of the FIFA sanction. It leaves Barcelona's midfield with a big hole, when considered with Rafinha's injury. The usual midfield of Busquets, Rakitic and Iniesta each had a replacement, with Mascherano, Rafinha and Sergi Roberto doing the duty. Now Roberto will be covering for two positions.
Lucho expect a lot from Sergi Roberto. The Reus-born player has responded outstandingly in all his appearances this season so far, and will now have to convince in a position that is more natural to him. What is clear is that he is now Barcelona's No 12.
