Robert tracking Funes Mori but Barça won't bid this summer

Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez was at the Gillette Stadium in Boston on Saturday to watch Argentina’s Copa America quarter-final win over Venezuela.

He is in the United States to follow the progress of Barça players Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano. Messi, because he’s just come back from an injury, and Mascherano, because the club are working hard to keep him at the club this summer.

Robert wanted to take on talks over an improved deal for Mascherano first hand, which is why he has personally travelled to present Barça’s offer.

Aside from that, Robert also took advantage of the game to watch Ramiro Funes Mori, a player who impressed at River Plate under Marcelo Gallardo and who Barça have been gathering information on for a while.

Funes Mori signed for Everton last summer, though, so he seems an unlikely target at the moment.

Asked about the centre-back, Robert told SPORT: “He’s a good player and we’ve known him well for a long time, but we’re not going to sign him this summer.”

The player’s agent, Jorge Cysterpiller, is aware the Blaugrana have watched the player, although clarified there have been no negotiations. It’s more just keeping an eye on him for the future.

Funes Mori is a 25-year-old central defender who is very good in the air. The left-footed player has been a regular for Argentina at the Copa America alongside Manchester City’s Nicolas Otamendi.
