Revealed: Why Luis Suarez's wife nearly missed his first Barca goal

Any footballer would like to sign for FC Barcelona. He knows that's a good way to win titles, have a good salary and be recognised by the public. But not everyone can do this, and anyway, in the case of Luis Suarez, his desire to play for the Catalan side was motivated by other factors. The greatest of them was his wife, Sofia Balbi, whom he met when he was 15 and she was 13.

She was one of the people who Four Four Two magazine spoke to in an article about the Barcelona star. And in the interview she explains the player's desire to sign for Barcelona, and told a funny story, about what happened the day Suarez scored his first Barcelona goal.

"I will never forget his first goal, against Apoel in the Champions League. I was not there, but watching the game on television. In fact, I saw it... more or less.

"My son Benjamin had a small incident and I had to leave home for a little while. But believe me, I saw Luis' goal and I felt very proud."

On Suarez's move to Barcelona, she said: "I don't believe that all this has become a reality. It was like I was seeing him play for the first time. Luis has always wanted to play here. It's not something we thought about when we were in Uruguay, because even for a professional football player it seemed far away.

"But to play in Barcelona has always been his dream, more than anything else, as a growing child. It is our second home. Our daughter Delfina was born here, and here we have most of our family. We like the culture, food.... everything we want, we have here."
