RCD Espanyol's squad not valued at half of one Lionel Messi

The distance between FC Barcelona and Espanyol depends on your point of view. One way of looking at it is valuations. Barcelona's squad is worth 693 million, according to Transfermarkt. Meanwhile, Espanyol's is worth 58m - practically half of what Messi alone is valued at - 120m.

Barcelona and Espanyol arrive at the fourth derbi of the season at different levels. Luis Enrique's team are fighting for the title, while Constantin Galca's side are fighting relegation.

Sergio Busquets is worth 50m, just 8m less than the whole Espanyol squad put together, with the most valuable Pericos players being Marco Asensio 8m, Felipe Caicedo 5m, and Alvaro Gonzalez 4m.

At Barcelona the most expensive are Leo Messi 120m, Neymar 100m, Luis Suarez 90m, Sergio Busquets 50m, Rakitic 45m, Pique 40m, Iniesta 35m and Arda Turan 35m. Meanwhile, Douglas and Masip, at 1m each, are the worst valued.

Barcelona are the second most valuable squad in La Liga, with Madrid first on 697.8m. Espanyol are 13th, ahead of Las Palmas, Rayo Vallecano, Getafe, Eibar, Levante, Sporting and Betis.

The international top 10 is: Real Madrid (697.8), FC Barcelona (693), Bayern Munich (572), Manchester City (501), Chelsea (495), Arsenal (440), Manchester United (418), PSG (414), Juventus (397) and Liverpool (366).

Espanyol's market value is below all Premier League clubs and actually is equal to that of Middlesborough in the Championship. Hull City, fourth in the table, are worth 68.9m, more than Espanyol. Only Ingolstadt (34) and Hannover (54) are worth less in the Bundesliga.

However, as Johan Cruyff said, "I've never seen a bag of money score a goal".
