Rakitic: Alcacer doesn't have anything to worry about

Ivan Rakitic says it’s important to let Lionel Messi recover as Barcelona recorded their second successive win without the Argentine star.

Saturday’s 5-0 triumph over Sporting Gijon was followed up with a hard-fought 2-1 Champions League win against Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday.

“We’re talking about the best player in history,” Rakitic said.

“It’s always better when Messi’s available, but we have to let him recover properly, give him time. This win was also for him, I’m sure he enjoyed it.”

The Croatian midfielder also defended Paco Alcacer, who began the game in Messi’s place but was taken off after 53 minutes after hardly being involved.

He added: “It wasn’t an easy game or anyone. They were strong in defence, they didn’t leave any space.

“It was difficult to get into the area. Alcacer doesn’t have anything to worry about.”

Finally, he praised the Bundesliga side’s home record, which in turn led to him highlighting the significance of coming from behind to win at Borussia Park.

“That they got the first goal was a big advantage for them, especially because they were so intense,” Rakitic said. “It’s not easy to win here.

“It’s no coincidence they’re so strong at home, the numbers are there for all to see. They work hard.

“In the first half we had four chances, though, and they took the lead with their only one. I think it was a good game and it’s strengthened us as a team.”
