The Replacements: Sergi Roberto might not be the last

The Replacements: Sergi Roberto might not be the last

Luis Enrique decided to use Sergi Roberto as right back during pre-season, and then used him there again in that position against Athletic, bringing him on from the bench. And he played as a starter against Malaga in the same place, where the Reus-born player not only met the standards required, but showed he can also add a lot in this position.

Fears about his possible defensive weakness and excess desire to attack  were eliminated against Malaga, where he didn't stop going up and down the wing - without forgetting to stop the attackers. With Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal awaiting January, when they can play, what happened to Sergi Roberto because of Dani Alves' injury may become commonplace. The atypical season plan, thanks to the FIFA sanction, means Luis Enrique needs to get most out of his squad.

For now, players like Vermaelen, who is more accustomed to being on the bench (or out injured) even responded with a goal, while Sergi Roberto was at ease playing out wide. Until January 1, Barca will have to see how some men who had a secondary role react to being first choice - and there's nobody who would object to anyone taking their chance.
