Pele tells Messi to reconsider international retirement

Former Brazilian footballer Edson Arantes do Nascimento 'Pele' has advised Lionel Messi to reconsider his decision to quit the Argentine national team.

He said: "In the last ten years he has been the best player in the world, without doubt. What has happened to him are things that happen in football. Whoever takes a penalty can miss it".

In comments reported by British TV station 'Sky Sports', the Brazil legend added: "It is normal for him to be sad and disappointed, but he has to wait a while and forget this, as it is something that has happened to many great players. Everyone has missed a penalty at some point."

Pele said he hopes that Messi listens to him and takes his advice.

The Barça star, who is 29-years-old, announced his international retirement last Sunday, after losing the Copa America finals on penalties to Chile. It was his third successive lost final with Argentina.

It remains to be seen whether the concerted effort in Argentina, or the comments of Pele, lead to Leo having a change of heart.
