Neymar renewal edges closer as Barcelona forward's father tells PSG 'no'

Neymar’s future is close to being clarified and everything points to his renewal with Barcelona - until 2022, when he’ll be 30 - being confirmed this week.

The Brazilian has played his part in pushing through his desire, which is to remain at Barça, where he is happy and where he wants to continue making history.

Neymar’s father, who acts as his son’s agent, has now taken a big step towards completing the amplification of the 24-year-old’s terms: he’s turned down Paris Saint-Germain’s offer and told their Qatari owners that there’s no intention to leave Barcelona.

PSG have never been given reason to raise their hopes by Neymar Sr, as was the case with Manchester United last summer, who also would have paid the forward’s release clause.

Both times, as on the occasions when Real Madrid’s Florentino Perez made a move, Neymar’s father has always been honest and informed Barcelona.

It’s the same posture he took between 2011 and 2013, when having signed an option to move to Camp Nou, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich called - he’s already ruled out any chance of ‘Ney’ signing for Los Blancos

PSG threatened Neymar’s continuity in Catalonia with a huge offer, one without precedence in football.

The Qatari owners’ intentions were to make the player the best paid player in the world in an operation which would total over 500 million euros, including the 190 million euro release clause (plus the tax if Barça refused to negotiate), a succulent signing on fee and wages worth more than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s.

The story of 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 has been repeated.

And, once again, Neymar has put sporting reasons and a desire to play for Barça first - the club’s desire to retain him has also been vital.

From July 1 he will become the second highest paid player at the club, only behind Messi.

In addition, the club will pay a record amount to provide the ’legal certainty’ that the player’s father has demanded, closing an agreement with the Attorney General and the State in which the club will be declared guilty and pay a fine of five million euros.
