Mestre: Barça hope to finalise Mess's renewal in first trimester of the year

The vice president of the club is optimistic that the Argentine star will commit his future to the club

Barcelona vice president Jordi Mestre spoke to Movistar after the win over Espanyol. He analysed the game, rated the referee and, of course, also spoke about Lionel Messi's future, about the contract renewal which all Barça fans are so interested in.

On the game, Mestre surprised by saying: "Honestly, I think that it's helped to see a good game that the referee showed two yellow cards early on. That allowed football to be played. Seeing the recent derbies, which had an exaggerated intensity, I think it helped cool the game down. Espanyol hadn't lost since September, it seemed they would make things difficult and in the end it came out OK."

Neymar and Luis Suarez have already committed their futures to the club. But the cherry on the cake it still lacking: Lionel Messi. And Mestre spoke about how things are progressing: "We haven't started negotiations for Messi's renewal, but after those of Neymar and Luis Suarez, we hope to finalise it in the first trimester of the year."
