Messi against six Real Madrid players for Champions League prize
UEFA have revealed the nominees for last season's awards
Just one Barça player is included on the 12-man shortlist
Lionel Messi against Real Madrid. UEFA have decided that the Argentine is the only Barcelona player worthy of recognition as they announce the candidates for the best players in last season's Champions League.
In contrast, Real Madrid, who won the competition for the third time in four years, beating Juventus in the final, have six nominess.
Here are the candidates, by position, for the best players in the Champions League 2016/17, as chosen by the managers of the 32 participants and 55 journalists:
Best goalkeeper: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Manuel Neuer (Bayern Múnich), Jan Oblak (Atlético de Madrid).
Best defender: Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus – now AC Milan), Marcelo (Real Madrid), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid).
Best midfielder: Casemiro (Real Madrid), Toni Kroos (Real Madrid), Luka Modrić (Real Madrid).
Best attacker: Paulo Dybala (Juventus), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid).

Messi is one of three forwards along with Cristiano Ronaldo and Juve's Paulo Dbala, both finalists last season. As well as CR7, Madrid players Marcelo, Sergio Ramos, Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric also feature.
The winners will be announced on August 24, when the group stage of the Champions League for the new season is drawn.
