Meeting in December as Barcelona push on with Messi renewal

Jorge Messi is in Spain for the Clasico and will begin talks with Bartomeu after that game

Lionel Messi’s contract renewal is a one of the priorities on Barcelona’s agenda. The board of directors have made it their No.1 sporting objective and hope to successfully push through the terms in the new year. Negotiations will be long and complex given it’s a contract for the best player on the planet, but bases have been touched and the moment to advance has arrived.

Until now there have just been telephone calls between the player’s father, Jorge Messi, and the Barça president, Josep Maria Bartomeu. Barça have communicated to Messi’s entourage that him remaining at the club is vital for them and that they hope to reach an agreement which makes him happy.

The next step is to begin to firm up the details in a physical meeting between Jorge Messi and Bartomeu. The player’s father plans to travel to Barcelona in the coming days to watch the Clasico at Camp Nou on Dec. 3. Before that game no meeting is planned, but in the days that follow there will be one between Jorge Messi and Bartomeu.

In this meeting they will talk about the more concrete details, but, above all, it will serve as the first occasion in which Barcelona can reaffirm their intentions.

SPORTING PROJECT

Bartomeu will explain a framework which he hopes will ensure Leo remains comfortable and satisfied at the club. He intends to show Messi that the sporting project will continue on the same path. The renewals of Sergio Busquets and Neymar, plus imminent new deals for Luis Suarez, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Ivan Rakitic are examples of this.

The club will offer the 29-year-old a contract similar to that of Andres Iniesta. A proposal for the great legends of the club, the ‘one club men’. That is to say, that he can finish his career at the same club in which he was formed.

Messi will be free to decide until when he wants to extend his contract and from there talks will begin about the economic conditions and Barça are clear that they should allocate an important amount to ensure the best player in the world is paid what he deserves.
