Mathieu suffers relapse to calf injury and set for more time out

The defender may not play again until 2017 after failing to recover from his latest injury

French centre-back Jeremy Mathieu has suffered a relapse to the calf injury in his right leg, Barcelona have confirmed.

The player was injured in the Catalan Super Cup final on Oct. 25 but has failed to recover on time and will be sidelined for between 15 and 20 more days.

Barça released a statement on Wednesday morning explaining the news: "In the final phase of his recovery from a claf injury the player has suffered a relapse. He will be out for approximately 15-20 days."

The reality is that there had been doubts for a while. Injured at the end of October, he was set to return within three weeks, in theory for the game against Malaga.

Test have now revealed he's not yet recovered and will be absent for a few more weeks yet.

Mathieu will miss a minimum of four official games plus the friendly in Qatar. In the best case scenario he could be back against Espanyol on Dec. 18 or he may be available for the Copa del Rey second leg game against Hercules on Dec. 21.
