Mathieu a Clasico doubt after getting injured in France game

Bad luck for Jeremy Mathieu. The Barcelona defender returned to the international stage with France on Tuesday night, but his joy soon turned to pain as he was forced off just eight minutes after coming on.

Mathieu came on for Patrick Evra at half-time of the game between France and Russia. With just eight minutes of the second half gone, though, he was taken off injured. The Barça defender received treatment on the pitch, but he didn’t recover and he was replaced by Lucas Digne. Mathieu did leave the pitch on his feet, without the need for a stretcher, although he was clearly limping.

Judging by the television images, the impression was Mathieu had injured his right knee and the fact he immediately requested treatment suggests he could be sidelined for this weekend’s Clasico. With just four days to go until Barça host Real Madrid, it wouldn’t be strange to see him miss out on the game he scored in last season.

However, we will have to wait for the diagnosis from the French national team’s doctors. France won the match 4-2 to continue their impressive pre-Euro 2016 form.
