Mateo Musacchio is one of Barcelona's summer transfer candidates

Barcelona will make a centre-back signing in the summer and one of the candidates for the role is Villarreal's Mateo Musacchio.

Tata Martino tried to sign him for Barcelona in 2013-14 but failed. The defender is one of the players who will form part of Argentina's squad for the Olympic Games.

Musacchio is one of the top centre-backs in the Spanish top flight, with a contract at Villarreal until 2018 and a release fee clause of 50m euros.

Although there has been no formal contact between the clubs, the player is one of the options for Luis Enrique to reinforce the team. However, they are not the only team that want him - Tottenham, Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal are the other teams trying to sign him.

The centre-back debuted at 16 years old with River Plate and proved his ability from there. At 18 he went to Villarreal and he has spent seven seasons with them. But this is not the first time he has crossed paths with Barcelona.

Tata tried to sign him and now has the chance to use him as Argentine manager. The player has just come back from injury so couldn't make the Copa America squad, but is expected to shine at the Olympic Games in Rio as one of the over-age players.
