Mascherano suggests Chiellini's comments on Messi's goal were taken out of context

Javier Mascherano had a philosophical outlook on Giorgio Chiellini's claim that Lionel Messi couldn't have scored the wonder goal he notched in the Copa del Rey final in Italy.

The defender said that Messi's goal against Athletic Club was something that he would not have been able to reproduce had he been playing in Serie A.

Most took that as Chiellini doubting Messi's ability, but Mascherano looked deeper.

"You have to understand [Chiellini's] context," he said.

"Sometimes words can be taken in a certain way, I think what he wanted to say was that Italian football is much more tactical, it's difficult to find room, find spaces.

"That's what he meant in my opinion. When we hear or read things, as footballers, you don't just read a headline

"You have to understand where it's going. But I still think in many situations, when Leo has the ball, it depends on himself, not the rival."
