Maradona also announced his international retirement after a final defeat

With the whole of Argentina still digesting the words of Lionel Messi after the Copa America final, when the Barça star announced his intention to quit international football, there has been a huge response calling for Leo to change his mind.

However this is not the first time that an Argentine superstar considered to be the world's best player has declared his retirement from the national side. That too was following a painful defeat in a major final.

In 1990, after losing the World Cup final to West Germany, Diego Maradona also appeared before the cameras to say he would no longer play for Argentina.

"This was the last time I will play with the Argentine shirt", he said.

After a few years, including time under suspension by FIFA for failing a drugs test, Maradona changed his opinion and eventually took part in the World Cup of 1994 in the USA. He could only play two games  however, as he again tested positive in an anti-doping test and was excluded from the remainder of the tournament.
