Jose Mourinho considers the midfielder fundamental for his project at Old Trafford

His contract expires in 2018 and Valverde wants to bring him to Barcelona

If Barcelona want to sign Ander Herrera at the request of Ernest Valverde, they will have to work hard. Manchester United do not want to let the Basque midfielder leave, with Jose Mourinho considering him vital to his project.

Valverde coached Herrera at Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona's new caoch would like to bring him to Camp Nou. According to The Independent, the Red Devils will reject any approaches for him. Herrera's contract expires in June 2018 and from January 1 that year he will be free to negotiate an exit for nothing.

Herrera was crucial as United won a treble of sorts this season - the Community Shield, the League Cup and the Europa League. He was voted the best player in the final of the latter against Ajax. Sources in Manchester say Barcelona have not approached the club over Herrera.
