The comments from the Malaga coach and president have raised a lot of controversy

Luis Enrique made clear he was not confident in the Andalusian side to do their duty

Malaga’s clash with Real Madrid in the last week of the season is under suspicion. The comments from the coach, a former Madridista, Michel, and the club’s president, sheikh Abdullah Al Thani have created enormous controversy. Even Luis Enrique, when asked about his confidence in Malaga to beat Real Madrid, said: “If my grandmother had wheels, she’d be a bike.”

The doubts started when Michel was asked on Onda Cero if another ‘Tenerife league’ situation could come about. That refers to when Barcelona won the title two years in a row thanks to former Madrid player Valdano’s side Tenerife beating Real Madrid. He replied: “I’m a lot more Madridista than Valdano,” hinting that he would impede Los Blancos on the final day.

Later on Cadena SER he tried to kill his words but the suspicion was already planted. He said: “It’s my Real Madrid but it’s also my Malaga. I have to respect the competition and always go out to win. My players would not understand me if this week I looked the other way.”

But the worst of all came when Al Thani got into a mess himself. Asked by a Barcelona fan on Twitter to beat Madrid on the final day, the Malaga president wrote: “The scum from Catalunya will not get a sniff of the league.”
