Nouri has been dianosed with serious and permanent brain damage

He collapsed in a friendly match against Werder Bremen at the weekend

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has sent a message of support to Ajax player Abdelhak Nouri, who has suffered "serious and permanent" brain damage after collapsing in a friendly at the weekend.

"Very sorry because of what happened with Appie, we are with you. STAY STRONG [] [] #staystrongappie @AFCAjax", Suarez wrote on his Twitter account.

The Uruguay international posted the message with a photograph in which he appears with Nouri, when he was just a young player in Ajax's academy and Suarez was in the Dutch side's first team. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is also in the image.

Nouri, 20, was playing for Ajax in a friendly match against Werder Bremen in Austria on July 8 when he collapsed after 72 minutes, leading to the postponement of the game.

And on Thursday, in a brief statement, Eredivisie side Ajax released a statement confirming the sad news.

"Ajax are deeply saddened by the news that Appie Nouri has been diagnosed with serious and permanent brain damage," they said.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his loved ones in this difficult time."
