Lionel Messi wins UEFA Best player in Europe Award

Lionel Messi won the UEFA Best Player in Europe award, finishing ahead of Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo, second and third respectively.

It's the second time Messi has won the trophy, after winning it in 2011, the year UEFA started to run the award. After that Iniesta won it in 2012, Ribery in 2013 and Cristiano Ronaldo in 2014.

Messi was voted for as the winner by journalists. Having won the treble with Barcelona, there was little doubt over who was going to lift the award this year, as Messi enjoyed one of his finest ever seasons.

Messi received 49 votes for the trophy. Luis Suarez picked up three, and Cristiano two, including one from Portugal.

Barcelona were the centre of the gala. Their triumph against Juventus in Berlin saw them lift the Champions League trophy for a fifth time, joining a select band of teams.
